When I first walked among the majestic, interwoven mangroves on Guatemala’s southwestern coast, I wasn’t just AgroAmérica’s CEO on a field visit. I was a witness to the quiet power of nature—those resilient trees rising where land meets sea, holding life in their roots. That day, alongside friends from international organizations and local government allies, something sparked in me. I knew AgroAmérica had to do more than grow food—we had to grow hope for ecosystems like these.
Mangroves aren’t just trees—they are guardians of communities, wildlife, and the future of our planet. Let me tell you why they matter, and how we’re working to defend them.
Why Mangroves Stole My Heart
Mangroves are nature’s unsung heroes. Rooted in tropical and subtropical coastlines, these salty forests do things most of us never notice. They shield coastal towns from storms, their roots absorbing wave energy and preventing erosion. They are champions of carbon capture, storing up to four times more than terrestrial forests, silently fighting climate change. They provide vital habitats for fish, crabs, and birds—vibrant ecosystems teeming with life. And they filter water, keeping our coasts clean.
Every time I see a mangrove, I think about how much we owe these quiet protectors.
A Personal Commitment in Action
That visit to Guatemala’s mangroves changed me. I made a commitment—not just as AgroAmérica’s CEO, but as someone who wants to leave the world better than I found it. Since then, we’ve poured our hearts into protecting and restoring these ecosystems.
Just last month, we launched the 2025 mangrove reforestation season, planting over 2,500 mangle botoncillo trees across 1.2 hectares. It wasn’t just a project—it was a celebration of teamwork, with partners like the National Forest Institute (INAB), the National Council for Protected Areas (CONAP), the Ministry of Environment (MARN), the Private Institute for Climate Change Research (ICC), FUNSALUD, and local leaders. Together, we didn’t just plant trees—we planted possibilities for healthier coasts and stronger communities.
In addition, this week we took part in the 2025 III Mangrove Symposium, held in Retalhuleu, Guatemala. It was a valuable space for exchanging ideas, where technical experts, community representatives, academia, government institutions, NGOs, the private sector, and international guests came together to share knowledge and strengthen conservation efforts. During the event, our Director of Sustainability, Javier Aguirre, presented AgroAmérica’s experience and the progress achieved through collaborative projects with strategic partners. These spaces reinforce our work and inspire us to keep driving joint action for mangrove restoration and protection.
A Legacy of Restoration
Our commitment is not new—but it grows stronger every day. Between 2021 and 2023, AgroAmérica, in collaboration with Rainforest Alliance and other partners, restored over 135 hectares of mangroves in Guatemala’s southwest region through the Mangrove System Restoration project. This effort received international recognition—not because we sought awards, but because it showed what’s possible when we care for both people and nature.
We’re also proud to take part in the Technical Mangrove Roundtables along Guatemala’s southern coast, where we work with local and regional partners to exchange knowledge and build long-term strategies. It’s an honor to be part of a movement greater than any one company—a movement for our planet.
Why Mangroves Matter to You
You might be wondering: “Why should I care about mangroves?” That’s a fair question. If you’ve ever enjoyed a plate of fresh seafood, walked along a quiet beach, or felt safe in a coastal town during a storm, mangroves probably played a role—without you even realizing it.
They work for all of us: protecting coastlines, supporting fisheries that feed millions, and fighting climate change so we can all breathe a little easier. But they’re in danger—threatened by deforestation and development. That’s why, at AgroAmérica, we’re fully committed: losing mangroves means losing part of our planet’s resilience.
A Global Wave of Hope
The world is beginning to recognize the value of mangroves. UNESCO has declared several mangrove sites as Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage Sites, granting them the protection they deserve. From Indonesia to the Philippines, millions of mangrove trees are being planted to restore degraded coasts. Scientists are using drones and satellites to study these ecosystems and find better ways to protect them. Countries are enacting laws to stop illegal logging and promote sustainable practices.
And most importantly, communities are stepping up—learning, leading, and caring for the mangroves that sustain them.
Join Us This July 26
Every July 26, we celebrate the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. It’s a moment to pause, to value these incredible forests, and to renew our commitment to their future.
At AgroAmérica, we’re proud to be part of this global effort—but we can’t do it alone. Whether you live near a coastline or far from one, you can help: share this story, support conservation initiatives, or simply learn more about why mangroves matter.
For me, this work is personal. It’s for the people I’ve met in coastal towns, for the wildlife that depends on these forests, and for the legacy we will leave to our children.
Mangroves have taught me that small actions—planting a tree, joining a cause—can create waves of change. I hope you’ll join us in celebrating and protecting these silent heroes.
Together, we can ensure they thrive for generations to come.
