Forests are essential for life on Earth: they are home to <strong>80% of terrestrial biodiversity<\/strong>, absorb <strong>over 25% of global CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong>, and provide livelihoods for <strong>more than 1.6 billion people<\/strong>. Globally, reforestation efforts have made significant progress, with more than <strong>59 million hectares restored<\/strong> in the last 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Significant efforts have been made worldwide to reverse deforestation. For example, between <strong>2010 and 2020<\/strong>, the deforestation rate decreased from <strong>16 million hectares per year to 10 million<\/strong>, thanks to conservation and reforestation initiatives. Countries like <strong>China, India, and Ethiopia<\/strong> have led massive tree-planting campaigns, restoring millions of hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, challenges remain: <strong>every year, approximately 10 million hectares of forests are lost<\/strong>, according to the <strong>FAO<\/strong>, affecting biodiversity and accelerating climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/agroamerica.com\/en\/home\/\">AgroAm\u00e9rica<\/a>, we reaffirm our commitment to forest conservation under our <strong>No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation<\/strong> policy. We focus on <strong>preserving primary forests, restoring landscapes, and protecting key ecosystems<\/strong> in the countries where we operate: <strong>Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Latin America: Challenges in Forest Conservation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our reforestation and conservation efforts are even more crucial considering the alarming deforestation rates in the region:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udf33 <strong>Guatemala:<\/strong> The <strong>Maya Forest<\/strong>, in the <strong>Pet\u00e9n<\/strong> department, has lost approximately <strong>33% of its forest cover over the past 23 years<\/strong>. Despite being protected as part of the <strong>Maya Biosphere Reserve<\/strong>, this area faces one of the highest forest loss rates in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udf33 <strong>Peru:<\/strong> In <strong>2022<\/strong>, the country lost approximately <strong>146,575 hectares of forests<\/strong>, a <strong>6% increase compared to the previous year<\/strong>. Peru ranks <strong>third in deforestation<\/strong> in the Amazon region, behind <strong>Brazil and Bolivia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udf33 <strong>Ecuador:<\/strong> Ecuador has one of the highest deforestation rates in Latin America, losing an estimated <strong>60,000 to 200,000 hectares of native forests annually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AgroAm\u00e9rica\u2019s Actions for Conservation and Reforestation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address these challenges, <strong>AgroAm\u00e9rica<\/strong> has taken concrete steps to reverse forest loss and promote ecosystem restoration:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Protection of 972 hectares of forests within our plantations<\/strong>, contributing to carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.<br>\u2705 <strong>Conservation of over 19,000 hectares in the Maya Biosphere Reserve<\/strong>, in partnership with <strong>Solidaridad and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).<\/strong><br>\u2705 <strong>Implementation of a forest nursery with a capacity for 100,000 trees<\/strong>, used for reforesting riverbanks and degraded areas in <strong>Guatemala<\/strong>.<br>\u2705 <strong>Donation of more than 20,000 trees<\/strong> to government institutions, NGOs, and local communities to support <strong>reforestation programs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Technology and Monitoring for Zero Deforestation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the <strong>Global Forest Watch<\/strong> digital platform, AgroAm\u00e9rica monitors deforestation and forest fire activity in real time near its operations. This has helped us maintain <strong>zero deforested hectares and zero detected fires<\/strong> in our plantations and those of our suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Restoration of Key Ecosystems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of our most ambitious projects is the <strong>restoration of the Manch\u00f3n Guamuchal ecosystem<\/strong>, an internationally significant wetland on <strong>Guatemala\u2019s Pacific coast<\/strong>. Since <strong>2021<\/strong>, in collaboration with <strong>Rainforest Alliance, local communities, and government authorities<\/strong>, we have restored <strong>135 hectares of mangroves in just two years<\/strong>, with a goal of <strong>250 hectares by 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Greener Future for All<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forests are essential for life, and their conservation is a shared responsibility.
