That day, alongside friends from international organizations and local government allies, something sparked in me. Mangroves aren\u2019t just trees\u2014they are guardians of communities, wildlife, and the future of our planet. Let me tell you why they matter, and how we\u2019re working to defend them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mangroves are nature\u2019s unsung heroes. Rooted in tropical and subtropical coastlines, these salty forests do things most of us never notice. They shield coastal towns from storms, their roots absorbing wave energy and preventing erosion. They are champions of carbon capture, storing up to four times more than terrestrial forests, silently fighting climate change. They provide vital habitats for fish, crabs, and birds\u2014vibrant ecosystems teeming with life. And they filter water, keeping our coasts clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every time I see a mangrove, I think about how much we owe these quiet protectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Personal Commitment in Action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That visit to Guatemala\u2019s mangroves changed me. I made a commitment\u2014not just as AgroAm\u00e9rica\u2019s CEO, but as someone who wants to leave the world better than I found it. Since then, we\u2019ve poured our hearts into protecting and restoring these ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just last month, we launched the 2025 mangrove reforestation season, planting over 2,500 mangle botoncillo trees across 1.2 hectares. It wasn\u2019t just a project\u2014it was a celebration of teamwork, with partners like the National Forest Institute (INAB), the National Council for Protected Areas (CONAP), the Ministry of Environment (MARN), the Private Institute for Climate Change Research (ICC), FUNSALUD, and local leaders. Together, we didn\u2019t just plant trees\u2014we planted possibilities for healthier coasts and stronger communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition, this week we took part in the 2025 III Mangrove Symposium, held in Retalhuleu, Guatemala. It was a valuable space for exchanging ideas, where technical experts, community representatives, academia, government institutions, NGOs, the private sector, and international guests came together to share knowledge and strengthen conservation efforts. During the event, our Director of Sustainability, Javier Aguirre, presented AgroAm\u00e9rica\u2019s experience and the progress achieved through collaborative projects with strategic partners. These spaces reinforce our work and inspire us to keep driving joint action for mangrove restoration and protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Legacy of Restoration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Our commitment is not new\u2014but it grows stronger every day. Between 2021 and 2023, AgroAm\u00e9rica, in collaboration with Rainforest Alliance and other partners, restored over 135 hectares of mangroves in Guatemala\u2019s southwest region through the Mangrove System Restoration project. This effort received international recognition\u2014not because we sought awards, but because it showed what\u2019s possible when we care for both people and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We\u2019re also proud to take part in the Technical Mangrove Roundtables along Guatemala\u2019s southern coast, where we work with local and regional partners to exchange knowledge and build long-term strategies. It\u2019s an honor to be part of a movement greater than any one company\u2014a movement for our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why Mangroves Matter to You<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n You might be wondering: \u201cWhy should I care about mangroves?\u201d That\u2019s a fair question. If you\u2019ve ever enjoyed a plate of fresh seafood, walked along a quiet beach, or felt safe in a coastal town during a storm, mangroves probably played a role\u2014without you even realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They work for all of us: protecting coastlines, supporting fisheries that feed millions, and fighting climate change so we can all breathe a little easier. But they\u2019re in danger\u2014threatened by deforestation and development. That\u2019s why, at AgroAm\u00e9rica, we\u2019re fully committed: losing mangroves means losing part of our planet\u2019s resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Global Wave of Hope<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The world is beginning to recognize the value of mangroves. UNESCO has declared several mangrove sites as Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage Sites, granting them the protection they deserve. From Indonesia to the Philippines, millions of mangrove trees are being planted to restore degraded coasts. Scientists are using drones and satellites to study these ecosystems and find better ways to protect them. Countries are enacting laws to stop illegal logging and promote sustainable practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And most importantly, communities are stepping up\u2014learning, leading, and caring for the mangroves that sustain them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every July 26, we celebrate the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. It\u2019s a moment to pause, to value these incredible forests, and to renew our commitment to their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At AgroAm\u00e9rica, we\u2019re proud to be part of this global effort\u2014but we can\u2019t do it alone.
